would you like some cheese with that whine?

Three weeks ago there were doves on the lease. There were doves in my backyard. There were doves on the power lines.

…Saturday the season opened and there were NO doves.

None.

Zilch.

I could complain about the opener being a week later than usual, but honestly I saw the buggers leaving two weeks ago. I had been working on non-slip retrieving drills in anticipation of the opener, but it’s not like she’ll never get to use those skills.

On a separate note: the loggers are back at the lease. This has to be some kind of record-6 months to harvest ~600 acres. They hope to be done in 2-3 weeks if the rains hold off.  The kick in the nuts is that they are primarily in the areas that I was hoping to hunt the archery opener this weekend. There are still areas like these where the deer have literally altered the landscape with their passage. :

IMG_0024It is simply very difficult to get to these areas with the torn up roads and at this point I would need to drag the deer a good ways (uphill mind you) to get back to the vehicle.

On a more pleasant note, who says spaniels don’t enter the water with style:
